Gherla, Romania Holocaust Memorial and Synagogue

Commission Chair Lesley Weiss spoke May 22, 2016 at the dedication of a memorial in Gherla, Romania to victims of the Holocaust from the city and the surrounding area. To her right are the Mayor of Gherla, Marius Sabo, and interpreter Zorin Diaconescu, with Mike Klein, head of the Jewish Americans of Romanian Origin Association in Maryland, behind them. The Commission funded the memorial built by the Jewish Community of Gherla with funds donated by survivors and their descendants through the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee arranged by Commission Member Hebert Block. Klein was the key force behind the project. The memorial is adjacent to the city's former synagogue building, which the Community hopes to repair. Remarks of Chairwoman Lesley Weiss
