Berehovo (Beregszasz) Synagogue and Holocaust Memorial
Commission Chairwoman Lesley Weiss spoke at the dedication of a Holocaust memorial in Berehovo (Beregszasz), Ukraine on June 21, 2016 in honor of the memory of thousands of Jews murdered during the Holocaust from the town and from the Transcarpathian region. In the Spring of 1944, more than 100,000 Jews were confined to ghettos and, then, deported to Auschwitz and other concentration camps. It is estimated that no more than 20 percent of Transcarpathian Jews survived. The Shalom Foundation of Beregszasz-Berehovo erected a memorial wall with funds from the Hungarian government, individual donations, and monies raised by Chairwoman Weiss. Over 4,000 names are inscribed on the memorial wall. For more information on the dedication click here
